Child Benefit
Child Benefit is a universal benefit paid to all parents or guardians, regardless of income or financial status.
How much is paid?
The current amount of child benefit paid is £17 a week for a first child, and an additional £11.40 a week for every subsequent child.
How is it paid?
Child benefit is paid to the parent or guardian directly reponsible for the care of a child, and is available for every child up to the age of 16. If the child is in full time education, payment is extended to the age of 19.
Payments are tax free, and can be paid directly into the bank account of the parent.
When should I claim?
Claims should be made as soon as possible after the birth of a child, although payments can be backdated for a period of up to 3 months. Claims can be made easily online at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/index.htm
